Japanese Student Visa: Application Process and Timeline

Your Japanese Student Visa Timeline: From First Question to First Day in Japan

Preparation for studying in Japan on a student visa typically begins 6–8 months in advance, based on immigration deadlines. However, we recommend starting 8–12 months before your intended start date to allow time for school selection, document preparation, and to secure a spot!

Japanese Student Visa Application Checklist Before Applying

  • Must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old.
  • Certificate of JLPT N5 or proof of 150+ hours of Japanese language study
  • Financial sponsorship (self or other) with a bank statement showing at least ¥2,000,000 in available funds (approximately 12,500 USD or 10,800 EUR)

Don’t worry — we guide you through every step and help you prepare all documents. 85% of our students get their visa approved on the first try.

What is the 150-hour Japanese study requirement?

The 150-hour requirement is the minimum needed by the Japanese government to apply for a student visa. If you don’t have a JLPT N5 certificate, you’ll need to provide proof of this requirement. We recommend taking a course that can officially certify your study hours. For example, Coto Online provides a certificate upon completing 150 hours of study.

What is a financial sponsor?

A financial sponsor is someone who supports you during your studies in Japan, such as yourself or a member of your immediate family. For Coto School Finder, you’ll need to provide proof of at least 2 million yen to proceed with your application. This is required to demonstrate to the Japanese government that you can support yourself during your stay in Japan.

FAQ

What is the 150 hours requirement?

Many Japanese language schools require students to have completed at least 150 hours of Japanese language study before applying for a student visa course. This requirement helps demonstrate a basic understanding of Japanese and supports the visa application process.

When are the application deadlines?

Application deadlines vary by intake (January, April, July, and October), and schools often recommend applying 6-8 months in advance.

What level of education do I need?

The minimum requirement is a high school diploma, associate’s degree, or equivalent (such as a GED for homeschooled students). A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
